Collections can outgrow ordinary home-policy limits
Coins, stamps, sports memorabilia, cards, books, models and historical objects can accumulate significant value over time. The Insurance Bureau of Canada advises that valuable collections may face special limits or narrower covered perils under a standard home policy.
The right approach depends on the type of collection, its total value and whether items are individually listed or insured as a group.
Build an inventory that could survive a loss
Record descriptions, identifying numbers, condition, purchase date, price and current value. Photograph items and retain receipts, grading certificates or provenance. Keep a secure copy away from the collection.
Some collections require specialist appraisal or recognized grading. Ask how newly acquired items are treated before they are formally added and how often values should be reviewed.
Storage and use are part of the submission
Describe safes, alarms, fire protection, humidity or temperature controls and off-site storage. Tell the broker when items are taken to shows, displayed publicly, mailed, sold through a dealer or lent to another person.
Coverage in transit or at an exhibition may have different limits, packing requirements or territory. Commercial dealing is not the same as maintaining a personal collection.
Understand the settlement method
Ask whether a covered loss is settled using scheduled value, market value, replacement cost or another basis. Also review deductibles, breakage, flood, water, theft from an unattended vehicle, disappearance and damage from gradual deterioration.
A matching set or series can create additional value questions when only one item is damaged or lost.
Organize the collection review
Bring the inventory, appraisals, storage and security details, transport plans, buying and selling activity and claims history. For artwork or wine, use the dedicated fine art and wine collection guides.
