Ontario’s rules for off-road vehicles address registration, plates, insurance, helmets, age and where an ATV may be operated. Requirements vary by roadway, trail, municipality, vehicle and rider. Review the current provincial rules and local bylaws before riding; an insurance policy does not make an otherwise prohibited use legal.

Westoak can help with the insurance questions while you confirm operational requirements with the appropriate government or trail authority. You can also compare coverage considerations for snowmobiles and other recreational vehicles.

Liability is only one part of the review

An ATV policy may include third-party liability and, when selected and available, accident benefits, collision or upset, comprehensive coverage and specified-perils protection. Terms differ, so confirm:

  • Which riders and uses are permitted
  • The liability limit and deductibles
  • Whether theft, fire, vandalism and collision are covered
  • How the ATV’s value will be settled after a covered total loss
  • Whether accessories, upgrades and protective equipment need to be scheduled

Do not assume a home or auto policy covers the ATV simply because it is stored at home or towed by an insured vehicle.

Usage details affect eligibility

Tell your broker whether the vehicle is used on private land, public trails, permitted roads, a farm, for work or in organized events. Racing, rental, passenger use, commercial activity and modified performance may be excluded or require different underwriting.

List all regular operators, including younger riders. Vehicle type, engine size, make, model, year, purchase price, financing, storage and anti-theft measures are also relevant.

Remember the trailer and transport exposure

Confirm how the ATV is carried and whether the trailer has its own physical-damage coverage. Liability while towing generally raises different policy questions from damage to the trailer or ATV. Secure the machine properly and retain photographs, serial numbers and receipts for equipment and modifications.

Update the policy as the vehicle changes

Adding a plow, performance parts, a second ATV or a new regular rider can affect coverage. Contact Westoak with the vehicle details and planned use. We can explain available terms and restrictions; the insurer determines eligibility and premium.
